The basic task of the Institute is to study the different fields of ecology and botany both for basic and applied sciences at international standards. These tasks can be grouped around the following objectives:

• Organisation and dynamics of biocoenoses
• Ecological effects of climate- and land use changes
• Research in restoration ecology and conservation biology
• Exploration and analysis of natural vegetation in Hungary
• Taxonomic studies
• Exploring and utilising new plant resources
