SAND GRASSLAND RESTORATION FIELD TRAINING
Field course organised by the Institute of Ecology and Botany and the Kiskunság National Park Directorate, Hungary

12-17 May 2008,Kiskunság National Park, Fülöpháza, Hungary

A field course was organised by the Institute of Ecology and Botany and the Kiskunság National Park in Fülöpháza 12-17th May 2008. The aim of the course was to introduce ongoing restoration ecological experiments to the participants, and present methodologies that are suitable for monitoring the restoration success.

Restoration trials of the past 12 years carried out at the Kiskun LTER site was introduced to participants of the field course. The aim of the experiments was to restore sand grassland community (Festucetum vaginatae), a grassland association endemic to the Pannonian biogeographical region at sites with different land use history. A common use of the land in the region is as tree plantation of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia), a species of North American origin that became invasive. Another use is as arable field, but a very intensive abandonment took place after the political change in 1989. Thus, oldfields of different ages are prone to plant invasion, by black locust, ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia), common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) and other species.

Different restoration methodologies have been applied at these sites to assist the recovery of the native grassland. The long history of the experiments enabled us to summarise the results and test for the possibility of generalization with the help of the participants of the field course.
